About one way clutch
A one-way clutch, also called a starter clutch or sprag clutch, lets the electric starter turn the crankshaft and then freewheels as soon as the engine fires. In two-wheelers it sits behind the magneto rotor, with spring-loaded rollers or sprags locking against the starter gear hub. The self roller kit supplies the rollers, springs and caps that wear out first, while the full assembly includes the housing and gear. Buyers compare roller diameter, spring tension, hardness of the race and fit to the engine model. Mechanics replace them when the self-start slips, grinds or clicks.
Buyer's guide
What to check
- Check roller diameter and length, or sprag type, against the original clutch.
- Confirm the bolt pattern and starter gear hub diameter for the engine model.
- Look for hardened races and rollers with consistent spring tension.
What to ask the supplier
- Ask whether the listing is the full assembly with starter gear or a roller, spring and cap kit.
- Ask for the two-wheeler models it fits.
