About auto idler pulley
An idler pulley guides the serpentine or timing belt around the engine and keeps the wrap angle right on the alternator, water pump and AC compressor pulleys. It turns freely on a sealed ball bearing and carries a smooth flat face or a grooved face, depending on which side of the belt it runs on. Pulley bodies come in steel or reinforced plastic. Buyers compare outer diameter, width, bore size, bearing make and running noise. Car service centres replace idlers alongside belt and tensioner kits, especially when a squeal or bearing rumble appears.
Buyer's guide
What to check
- Check outer diameter, pulley width and centre bore against the OE part.
- Confirm the face type, flat or grooved with the right rib count, matches the belt side it runs on.
- Look for a sealed bearing that spins smoothly with minimal play.
What to ask the supplier
- Ask for the OE cross-reference and the engine codes it fits.
- Ask whether the pulley body is steel or plastic and which bearing brand is fitted.
