About axle boot

An axle boot, also called a CV boot, is the pleated cover over the constant-velocity joint on a front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive shaft. It holds the joint's grease in place and keeps water, sand and grit out as the wheel steers and the suspension moves. Boots are made for the inner or outer joint and for the left or right side, in neoprene rubber or thermoplastic elastomer. Buyers compare material, bellows size, small and large end diameters and whether clamps and grease are supplied. Mechanics replace a torn boot quickly to save the joint from wear.

Buyer's guide

What to check

  • Check the small-end and large-end diameters and overall length against the joint.
  • Confirm the position: inner or outer joint, left or right side.
  • Look for the material, neoprene or thermoplastic elastomer, and its flex and heat resistance.

What to ask the supplier

  • Ask whether the kit includes clamps and a sachet of CV joint grease.
  • Ask for the vehicle model and year range the boot fits.
