About thermostat housing
A thermostat housing, often shaped as an elbow, holds the engine thermostat and connects the cylinder head or block to the radiator hose. When the coolant reaches its set temperature, the thermostat opens and coolant flows through the housing to the radiator. Housings are cast aluminium or moulded glass-filled plastic, and some carry a temperature sensor port or bleed screw. Buyers compare material, outlet angle and hose diameter, flange bolt pattern, sensor port and whether the thermostat and seal come fitted. Workshops replace cracked or leaking housings during cooling system repairs.
Buyer's guide
What to check
- Match the OE part number and engine code, including the flange bolt pattern.
- Check the outlet angle and hose spigot diameter.
- Confirm the sensor port thread and position where the engine uses one.
What to ask the supplier
- Ask whether the thermostat, gasket or O-ring comes fitted, and the thermostat opening temperature.
- Ask whether the housing is aluminium or glass-filled plastic.
