About timing chain
A timing chain links the crankshaft to the camshafts so the valves open in step with the pistons. Unlike a belt it runs in engine oil, yet the links stretch and the guides wear with mileage. The chain works with a hydraulic or spring tensioner and plastic-faced guide rails, and timing kits bundle the chain, tensioner, guides and sprockets for a complete job. Buyers compare chain type and link count, roller or silent design, tensioner style and fit to the engine code. Workshops replace them when a cold-start rattle or timing fault appears.
Buyer's guide
What to check
- Check the link count and chain type (roller, bush or silent inverted-tooth) against the engine.
- Confirm the tensioner type, hydraulic or spring, matches the original.
- Check the kit contents: chain, tensioner, guide rails, sprockets and gaskets.
What to ask the supplier
- Ask for the engine codes and OE part numbers the chain or kit fits.
- Ask for the warranty period and whether the parts are OE or aftermarket.
