About axle shaft
An axle shaft transmits torque from the differential to the wheel hub and, on many rear axles, also carries part of the vehicle's weight. Rear wheel axles on light commercial vehicles, pickups, three-wheelers and tractors are usually forged alloy steel, induction hardened along the spline and bearing seats. Designs include semi-floating and full-floating types, each with a set flange or hub end. Buyers compare overall length, spline count and diameter, flange bolt pattern, material grade and surface hardness. Transport operators and repair garages replace bent or sheared shafts to put a vehicle back on the road.
Buyer's guide
What to check
- Check overall length, spline count and spline diameter against the original shaft.
- Confirm the flange diameter and wheel-stud bolt pattern.
- Look for the steel grade and surface hardness (HRC) on the spline and bearing seats.
What to ask the supplier
- Ask whether the shaft is a semi-floating or full-floating design and which vehicle models it fits.
- Ask for a material certificate or hardness test report per batch.
