About engine bearing
Engine bearings are the thin split shells that carry the crankshaft in the block and the connecting rods on the crank pins, riding on a film of pressurised oil. Most are steel-backed with a bi-metal aluminium alloy or tri-metal copper-lead lining and an overlay. Sets come in standard size and in undersizes for reground crankshafts, along with thrust washers or flanged thrust shells. Buyers compare lining type, wall thickness, size step, oil hole and groove position and fit to the engine code. Engine rebuilders and machine shops buy them for overhauls and crank regrinds.
Buyer's guide
What to check
- Check the size marking, standard or undersize (0.25 mm, 0.50 mm and so on), against the crank grind.
- Confirm the lining type, bi-metal or tri-metal, suits the engine.
- Check oil hole, groove and locating tang positions against the original shells.
What to ask the supplier
- Ask whether the set covers main bearings, connecting rod bearings or both, plus thrust washers.
- Ask for the engine codes the set fits.
