About brake hose

The flexible link in a hydraulic brake system, a brake hose lets fluid reach calipers and wheel cylinders on wheels that steer and move with the suspension. Standard hoses use layered rubber with textile reinforcement, while braided stainless steel lines with a PTFE core give a firmer pedal or lever. End fittings vary between banjo, male and female threaded and eye types. Buyers compare length, end fitting and thread size, burst pressure, volumetric expansion, DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid compatibility and the routing for the vehicle model.

Buyer's guide

What to check

  • Measure the hose length and match both end fittings: banjo, threaded or eye
  • Confirm the thread size and pitch of each fitting
  • Check the construction: rubber with textile layers, or braided stainless steel over PTFE
  • Look for compatibility with DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid

What to ask the supplier

  • Ask for burst pressure test data and compliance with FMVSS 106 or an equivalent standard
  • Ask for the vehicle fitment list
