About brake caliper
Disc brakes rely on the caliper to convert hydraulic pressure into clamping force, pressing the pads against the rotating disc. A caliper assembly typically includes the housing, one or more pistons, seals, dust boots, a bleed nipple and slide pins or a bracket. Floating, single-piston units suit most cars and scooters, while fixed, multi-piston calipers serve performance vehicles and heavy motorcycles. Buyers compare piston count and bore diameter, mounting bolt spacing, disc thickness compatibility, body material in cast iron or aluminium, and the inlet thread for the brake hose.
Buyer's guide
What to check
- Match the mounting bolt spacing and the disc diameter and thickness it suits
- Check the piston count and bore diameter
- Confirm the hose inlet thread size and the bleed nipple position
- Look for a cast iron or aluminium body with a corrosion-resistant coating
What to ask the supplier
- Ask whether pads, bracket and slide pins come with the assembly
- Ask for the vehicle fitment list or OEM part number
