About ball joint

A ball joint is the pivot between a control arm and the steering knuckle, letting the wheel steer and move with the suspension at the same time. It uses a hardened ball stud inside a greased socket, sealed by a rubber boot. Designs include press-fit, bolt-on and riveted types, upper and lower joints, and versions built into the control arm. Buyers compare stud taper and thread size, housing diameter, boot material, greaseable or sealed-for-life construction and vehicle fitment. Ball joints serve cars, light commercial vehicles and utility vehicles.

Buyer's guide

What to check

  • Match the stud taper, thread size and housing diameter to the vehicle application
  • Check the boot material (rubber or polyurethane) and the boot clamp
  • Confirm the joint position: upper or lower, left or right
  • Look for a forged steel stud with a case-hardened ball surface

What to ask the supplier

  • Ask whether the joint is greaseable or sealed-for-life
  • Ask for the OEM cross-reference number and the warranty period
