About tyre hugger

Mounted close over the rear tyre on the swingarm, a tyre hugger catches spray, mud and stones thrown up by the wheel and keeps them off the shock absorber, chain area and rider. It also gives the rear end a tight, racing look. Variants include carbon fibre huggers for a light, sporty finish and moulded ABS mudguard huggers, with model-specific versions for KTM bikes. Buyers compare material, fit to the swingarm mounting points, tyre clearance, chain guard integration, weight and finish. Sport and naked bike owners, along with custom workshops, are the usual buyers.

Buyer's guide

What to check

  • Confirm the model fit and swingarm mounting points, for example on KTM bikes.
  • Check the material: genuine carbon fibre, carbon-look ABS or plain ABS, and wall thickness.
  • Confirm tyre clearance for the stock tyre size and any wider aftermarket tyre.

What to ask the supplier

  • Ask whether a chain guard is built in or the original one is retained.
  • Ask for the mounting hardware and the finish (gloss, matte or painted).
