About insulation tape
Electricians wrap insulation tape around joints, cable splices and wire bundles to insulate them, and use its colours to mark phases. PVC insulation tape is the common choice: stretchy, flame retardant and moisture resistant, with a pressure-sensitive rubber adhesive. Cotton insulation tape is a cloth tape used in motor and transformer winding work and for mechanical protection of joints. Rolls vary by width, length, thickness and colour. Buyers compare thickness, breakdown voltage, adhesion, elongation, temperature rating and roll length. Panel builders, harness makers and hardware shops buy them by the carton.

What to check
- Check the tape thickness (for example 0.13 mm or 0.18 mm for PVC) and the width in mm.
- Confirm the breakdown voltage and the flame retardant property.
- Check the roll length in metres and the adhesion strength.
What to ask the supplier
- Ask for the BIS standard the tape conforms to and its test report.
- Ask for colour options for phase coding and the carton packing.
