Sirappu Cumin Powder is ground cumin for Indian cooking, sold in 100 gms and 200 gms packs and in a 1 kg size. It has a penetrating musty, earthy flavour and is a cooling spice special. Cumin is roasted very briefly on a low fire on a tawa and then ground into powder, which releases its flavour more fully, and it is considered an excellent ingredient for digestion. The powder is a light tan colour with a fine texture. In medieval history, cumin seeds were believed to keep lovers faithful and chickens from straying, and cumin's influence on Mexican cooking has grown. A native of Egypt and the Mediterranean, cumin is now grown increasingly in India, with Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh the most prominent producers. Botanical name: Cuminum cyminum L.; family Apiaceae; commercial part: fruit. Catalogue code: SIR10012 (200 gms), SIR10047 (100 gms)
