Alternators for four-wheelers with vented silver-grey housings, cast mounting lugs and a belt pulley on the front shaft; copper windings show through the vents. Pulleys range from single-groove V types to a multi-groove ribbed type, and some units carry an external cooling fan behind the pulley. Several units have a black rear cover. The alternator charges the battery and powers the vehicle's electrics while the engine runs.
