The backplate is shaped like a flower, its rounded lobes each carved with a shell or scroll motif around a fluted sunburst border and a smooth centre boss. The ring hangs from a barrel hinge at the centre and has a twisted rope pattern along its full round, so it lifts and drops against the plate to knock.
