About vitrified tile

Vitrified tiles are pressed from a clay and silica mix and fired until the body fuses into a hard, glass-like mass with low water absorption. Common types are PGVT (polished glazed vitrified tile), GVT, double charge and full-body tiles. PGVT in 600 x 600 mm is a popular choice for homes and offices, with a high-gloss glazed surface printed in marble, stone and abstract designs. Buyers compare water absorption, gloss level, scratch and abrasion resistance, flatness, edge rectification and shade consistency. Living rooms, lobbies, showrooms and commercial floors are typical uses.

Buyer's guide

What to check

  • Confirm the type, PGVT, GVT, double charge or full body, and the size in mm.
  • Check water absorption, typically 0.5% or lower for vitrified tiles.
  • Check gloss level, flatness and rectified edges for tight joints.

What to ask the supplier

  • Ask for the PEI abrasion class and Mohs scratch hardness for high-traffic areas.
  • Ask for shade, calibre and batch codes on every box, and box coverage in square metres.
