About electric bicycle
An electric bicycle adds a battery-powered motor to a pedal cycle, giving assisted riding for commuting, delivery and leisure. Common layouts use a rear hub motor of around 250 W with a lithium-ion battery on the frame or carrier, plus pedal assist levels and often a throttle. Buyers compare battery voltage and capacity, range per charge, charging time, motor power, frame material, wheel size, brakes and payload. In India, low-speed models limited to 25 km/h with motors up to 250 W are exempt from registration, which suits last-mile riders and delivery fleets.
Buyer's guide
What to check
- Check battery voltage and capacity in Ah (for example 36 V) and the claimed range per charge.
- Confirm motor power and type, such as a 250 W rear hub, and the top assisted speed of 25 km/h.
- Look at the frame material, wheel size and brake type (disc or V-brake).
What to ask the supplier
- Ask for the battery cell make, charging time and charger rating.
- Ask for separate warranty terms on battery, motor and frame.
- Ask for BIS certification of the lithium-ion battery cells.
