About polymer insulator
Polymer insulators, often called composite or silicone rubber insulators, support and isolate live conductors on overhead lines, substations and railway electrification. A fibreglass-reinforced core rod gives mechanical strength, silicone rubber housing and weather sheds give water-repellent, pollution-resistant insulation, and metal end fittings connect to the line and structure. Types include suspension, tension, pin, post and line post insulators across voltage classes. Buyers compare voltage rating, creepage distance, mechanical load rating, shed profile, end fittings and test certification. Utilities and EPC contractors value their light weight and resistance to contamination.
Buyer's guide
What to check
- Check the voltage class (such as 11 kV or 33 kV) and the creepage distance in mm.
- Confirm the specified mechanical load (SML) in kN for suspension and tension types.
- Check the housing material (HTV silicone rubber) and shed profile for the site pollution level.
What to ask the supplier
- Ask for type test reports to IEC 61109 for composite insulators.
- Ask for the end fitting type (ball and socket, clevis or tongue) and the galvanising thickness.
