About injection mould

Molten plastic forced under pressure into a hardened steel tool forms parts with fine detail and repeatable dimensions; that tool is the injection mould. Types range from single-cavity prototype tools to multi-cavity, family and hot-runner moulds for high volumes, used for automobile components, caps, containers, electrical housings and appliance parts. Core and cavity are machined, and often EDM-finished, from tool steels such as P20 or H13, with ejector, cooling and gating systems built in. Buyers compare cavity count, steel grade, runner type, cycle time, tool life and part tolerance.

Buyer's guide

What to check

  • Core and cavity steel grade (for example, P20, H13 or 718) and hardness in HRC
  • Cavity count and runner type: cold runner or hot runner
  • Cycle time and part tolerance against your drawing

What to ask the supplier

  • Ask for mould flow analysis and a T1 trial with sample parts
  • Ask for expected tool life in shots and the spare parts supplied
  • Confirm mould size and clamping tonnage fit your injection moulding machine
